Ep. 023: Apple Courts Perplexity, OpenAI/Jony Ive Legal Woes, Tesla Robotaxi Trials

The Week in Retail Focus: Apple Courts Perplexity, OpenAi/Jony Ive Legal Woes, Tesla Robotaxi Trials

Welcome to another episode recap of Retail Focus, where your hosts John Suder and Bart Mroz delve into the latest and greatest in retail, technology, and everything in between.

Welcome to the latest installment of Retail Focus. We’re talking Apple acquisition talks, Legal woes over at OpenAI, and the shaky start to Tesla’s Austin Robotaxi trials.

Apple's Potential Game-Changing Acquisition

Our first story revolves around the buzz in the tech community regarding Apple's rumored acquisition of Perplexity AI, a fast-growing AI search startup known for its chat-GPT-style search engine. Multiple reports suggest that Apple's mergers and acquisitions chief, Adrian Perica, has held talks with Perplexity's leadership over recent months. The possible options on the table include a full acquisition or a strategic partnership, embedding Perplexity's technology into iOS, Safari, or even a revamped Siri.

The stakes are high, as competing tech giants Samsung and Meta are reportedly eyeing similar opportunities with Perplexity AI. Apple's interest in Perplexity AI comes at a crucial time, as the company faces increased pressure to bolster its AI capabilities. Delays and criticisms towards its AI initiatives, particularly with Siri, necessitate a decisive move to catch up with competitors like Google and Meta.

Should Apple successfully acquire Perplexity AI, this could mark its largest acquisition to date, surpassing its previous $3 billion Beats acquisition. This development could dramatically enhance Apple's position in the AI-powered search and assistant sectors, although no formal offers have been made yet.

The Unfolding Drama Between OpenAI and Ive

In our second story, we shift focus to the collaboration between OpenAI and legendary designer Jony Ive. Their partnership aims to deliver a computing experience that is less socially disruptive than the smartphone. However, this ambitious project recently hit a major speed bump. OpenAI announced a $6.5 billion deal to acquire the hardware startup, IO Products, co-founded by Ive. This initiative faced legal challenges when a smaller startup, IYO, argued that OpenAI's new branding could confuse customers due to similarities with their existing trademarks.

The court agreed with IYO, and a temporary restraining order forced OpenAI to cease using the IO name in marketing and sales. OpenAI and Ive's project remains alive, but its public promotion is on pause as they navigate these legal challenges. A crucial hearing is scheduled for October to determine the outcome of this dispute.

Tesla's Autonomous Evolution

Our final story examines Tesla's foray into autonomous ride-sharing with the launch of its RoboTaxi trials in Austin. With public road testing initiated in late May 2025, Tesla's small-scale rollout includes 10 to 20 vehicles in a controlled area, exclusively accessible to invited riders.

Despite Tesla's emphasis on safety and caution, several incidents have raised regulatory scrutiny. Notable occurrences include vehicles driving erratically, attempting incorrect turns, and abrupt stops, prompting an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Tesla's entry into RoboTaxi services places it in direct competition with established players like Waymo and Zoox. Waymo, notably, has racked up extensive autonomous experience with operations in various major cities.

Tesla's advancements are being watched closely, as its success heavily influences its stock valuation and potential market leadership in autonomous technology.
